1. N1 は N2 で す
Meaning: N1 is N2
The particle は indicates that the word before it is the topic of the sentence. You select a noun you want to talk about, add は to show that it’s the topic & give a sentence about the topic.
For example:
わたしは がくせいです。
I am a student
さとさんは せんせいです
Sato is a teacher
2. N1 は N2 じ ゃ あ り ま せ ん
Meaning: N1 is not N2
For example:
わたしは せんせい じゃありません。
I am not a teacher
ワンさんは エンジニアじゃありません
Wan is not an engineer
3. N1 は N2 で す か
Meaning: Is N1 must be N2?
How to answer :
はい、 N2 です。
いいえ、N2 じゃありません / ではありません。
For example:
あなた は さとさんですか。
Are you a miller?
はい、わたし です。
Yes, I’m Miller
あのひと は かいしゃいんですか。
Is the other an office worker?
いいえ、かいしゃいん じゃありません。
No, not an office worker
4. N1 も N2 で す
Meaning: N1 is also N2
For example :
わたしは がくせいです。
I am a student
やまださんも がくせいです。
Yamada is also a student
さとさんは いしゃ じゃありません。
Sato is not a doctor
あわやさんも いしゃ じゃありません。
Awaya is not a doctor either
5. N1 は N2 の N3 で す
Meaning: N1 is N2 of N3
Noun 2 (N2) modifies Noun 3 (N3). The word の means of.
For example :
わたしは Jellyfish Education のしゃいんです。
I am an employee of Jellyfish Education
ミラーさんは ふじだいがく の かぐせいです。
Mira is a student at Fuji University
Attention:
+ The word [さ ん], in Japanese, it is used right after the listener’s surname to show respect for a person’s name. The word [さ ん] is not used for the speaker itself.
+ If you already know the name of the listener, don’t use [あ な た] but use the name + [さ ん] to call that person’s name.
